Hey all,
I just wondered if anyone besides me, likes to read historical fiction? That's not the only thing I read, I love all kinds of books. I guess that's why I've got a little over 300 audio books now. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone does read historical fiction, if there's anything you'd reccomend me reading? I've read a bunch, and I'm the girl who use to hate history? Now I like it, in the fiction sense at least because you get to know what the characters are feeling when they go through whatever events are unfolding in front of them and what's happening. Some historical fiction romances are cool to, or some kind of time travel book where a person goes back in time and experiences the past. I read one book where a girl wanted to be loved by someone who wasn't in the 20th century. She wanted to go back in the 19th century and fall in love and experience romance in a wealthy person's setting, and she did. If anyone likes books like that, it's a series and the first book was called, Both Sides of Time by Caroline B. Cooney. I haven't read it in a long time, but it was really good. What's kind of cool is when the author uses lots of detail so you could smell the salty breeze on a beach, or i wouldn't wana say horse droppings, but hell that's how it use to be before cars came into existance, so yeah. But anyway, if anyone has any ideas, let me know.
I love reading historical romances. Especially in Regency England. lol Falling in love with rakes and scoundrels seems so exciting to me. I love the settings and the evening dances and everything about being a Lord/Lady during that time period. I don't know if this is your thing but I really love the books by Julia Quinn. Her Bridgerton novels are the best but the other books she writes are also good as well.

I really enjoy books about ancient Greece or Rome. I especially like the books by Mary Renault for Greece and Kathlene McCullough for Rome. Both these authors make you feel like you are living in that time.

I read historical fiction once in awhile, but not often. My favorite time period is in the pre-civil war ere in America.
Most historical fiction I've read has been done by Jude Deveraux.
I'd have to say that my favorite settings are in england and scotland and like Michelle, I love the rakes and lifestyles of old england
I also love it, especiallyWestern times. Irene Bennett Brown has a few out. Haven, and Long Road Turning Paragon Springs Book One are two of them.
I love historical fiction particularly with a christian or inspirational theme. My favorite time period would be world war 2, or maybe the westward expansion covered wagon days, or maybe...
Yes, the wagon cover adventures are fun. I have a series of books that have the setting of the Oregon Trail and another one called Fortune's Journey by Bruce Coville. It's really interesting to hear what happens in the wagon and what people had to go through on a trail or getting supplies or whatever. I think as long as people sometimes put lots of twists and turns in a book to, that's fun to follow.
Oh good. Someone else mentioned Mary Reynault. I shall mention her again, because she is wonderful. If classical Greece wasn't alive for you before these books, it sure will be afterwards. She's most well known for The Persian Boy, which is all about Alexander, and great if you like your historical fiction about actual historical figures. Last of the Wine is probably my favourite, or Mask of Apollo.
My other geeky historical novel obsession is Patrick O'Brian's Aubry and Maturin series. 20 novels, following the same two characters in his Majesty's navy through the Napoleonic wars. There's a lot of well-researched, beautifully written fiction dealing with the same period, Forester's Hornblower series is good too, and the Sharp books, but Jack and Steven are just something else. Warning, you probably have to be into sailing a bit, otherwise these may just bore you to tears.
Thanks for the recs, guys. I have new authors to chase up! Yay!
Resonant you are so right about Mary Renalt. I discovered her when I was in college, home for the summer. The library of Congress had sent me some books and I started reading them. The first was something called "mask of apollo" read by Alexander Scourby. In five minutes I was in love with Ms. Renalt's writing and ancient Greece.
Oh well, enough hero worship. BTW: another one of the books in that stack was Plato's Symposium. Didn't know it then, but I was off on a journey of exploration that has lasted a lifetime.
